The “Beetle Sphere” sculpture is part of a series Indonesian artist Ichwan Noor started in 2011. Ichwan Noor was born in 1963 and is known for his colossal sculptures of hybrid human, animal and technological forms.
Noor gives the Volkswagen Beetle – a 1953 design that was in production for 41 years – several new shapes such as spheres and cubes. He has a fascination for transportation, and for the VW Beetle in particular. Ichwan Noor sees the Volkswagen Beetle as one of the most successful designs of all time, a design that everyone recognises regardless of age or social status.
For the “Beetle Sphere” he made a spherical replica of a Beetle body in polyurethane and cast it in aluminium. He made the spherical interior separately. To complete the illusion of the transformed car, he added original parts from a Volkswagen Beetle.
