While many artists create work with a deeper meaning, Frankey likes to positively disrupt and make people happy. His art statement is above all: fun. For Frankey, also known as Streetart Frankey, art has no boundaries. He strives to create work that is “not normal”. Recognisable, but changed in such a way that it becomes new. Frankey’s real name is Frank de Ruwe. He was born in 1977 and trained as an industrial designer.
Inspired by British graffiti artist Banksy, Frankey started working on what in the street art world is called urban inventions more than twenty years ago. Subtle, humorous street art that is actually illegal and occasionally disappears. Frankey sees something on the street and makes something up, or he repairs broken things with art. A lamp-post, a statue or a traffic sign with a twist, you will find Frankey all over Amsterdam. Smile guaranteed!
About his creation “Bear with me” he says: “Because this work is located directly opposite the Kiddieland play paradise, I drew on a childhood memory, namely the song “I saw two bears making sandwiches”. What’s more fun than making a sandwich? Eating it of course! So the bear is enjoying a tasty meal and inviting everyone to join him with his outstretched arm. Nice detail, the friendly bear that disrupts everything wears the same red hat that you can draw me in.”
