British artist Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. She made her breakthrough in the late 1980s as one of the Young British Artists, a group of artists who gained fame for the raw and shocking nature of their art. Emin’s work is known for being controversial, but also conceptual and autobiographical.
Tracey Emin expresses her personal experiences and emotions through painting, embroidery, sculpture, video and installations. Since 1995, Tracey Emin has been working with neon, displaying texts in her own handwriting. The strong visual impact of the brightly coloured light evokes a sense of urgency and intensity. The declaration of love you can see/read in “The more of you, The more I love you” embodies themes such as desire, intimacy and the many sides of love. The sentence suggests a love that grows. It could be about romantic or platonic love, or even self-love.
Although Emin often draws on her own experiences without shame, the words are also universal: they can be interpreted both generally and very personally. Emin’s work blurs the boundaries between art and autobiographical revelations. By sharing her vulnerabilities, she invites you to reflect on your own experiences, creating space for empathy and connection.
